Wedding Cupcake Cakes – skully style

Lately it seems the whole world has gone cupcake mad, and the wedding industry is no exception. You’ve all seen the cute cupcake towers in the bridal magazines, and all over the wedding blogs. And no wonder – they do look (and taste) freaken awesome!

Heck, even we latched on to the cupcake trend, although somewhat unwittingly. One day, CDH and I were walking through Mt. Eden (a ponsy, well-to-do area of Auckland where people tend to stare at us rudely) and we passed a bakery with a wedding cake display in the window, featuring several nondescript white lacey numbers and a five tier, towering mountain of multi-coloured cupcakes.

CDH gesticulated wildly. “I want that! We have to have one of those for our wedding!”

And so we did. We didn’t go with their $5 per cupcake package, though, but had a family friend make ours, which were decorated with crossed swords, strawberries and shields.

I’m becoming cupcake obsessed again – it doesn’t help that I keep finding these kreig cupcakes all over the internet. If you’re thinking about a cupcake tower for your wedding, or a treat for your next party, you’ll find plenty of inspiring ideas. I present epic punk, gothic, metal, halloween and all-round awesome cupcakes!

I haven’t found many skull cupcakes I actually like. Most of them look a bit lopsided and homoerotic. Skull-A-Day shows me the error of my ways with these adorable skullys. Look, some of them are even wearing glasses!

I found this awesome recipe for Black Metal Cupcakes on The Black Oven, a truly kreig blog dedicated to “Immaculate confections succumbed to Northern Darkness”. Love! I’ll be making a batch of these soon.

Danny Coffrey (Supergrass) and Pearl Lowe’s wedding featured lots of gothic details, including these stunning black cupcakes. Read the full story on Cupcakes Take the Cake. Yummers!
