Honeymoon Planning Tips

These awesome ducks can dive down about 8m before popping back up the surface like rockets. They're so awesome!
CDH planned a surprise honeymoon with his mother (who’s one cool lady) which he accidentally spoiled by telling me where we were going about two hours before we left
We went to Queenstown, NZ, for two days – a place I’d never visited before and CDH had visited briefly fifteen years ago and had been in a bad mood at the time.

From my honeymoon experiences, I offer you five tips for planning an awesome honeymoon!
DO go on a honeymoon
Since our three month Europe trek is ‘technically’ our honeymoon, I wasn’t keen on us spending MORE money on another trip. But CDH insisted, and I love travelling, so I couldn’t say no for long. I’m SO glad we did. Having those few days to really soak in our marriage really meant a lot to us.
Go someplace unfamiliar
I say this about all travelling opportunities, but you only get to live on the world once, so see as much of it as you can. If you’re strapped for cash, go somewhere in your state or country. You can always find discount bus, train and airline fares. Book a boutique hotel or B&B (I HATE faceless, characterless hotels) and explore unchartered territory together.

Do something unusual
For CDH and I, we had dinner at a restaurant WELL out of our normal price range. We did lots of other fun things – a jet boat ride, a sunrise spa, a LoTR four-wheel-drive tour, a wood-fired pizza and tall glass of alcoholic ginger beer with two bogans we met randomly, a steampship cruise – but the dinner was really, REALLY out of the ordinary for us.

Choose somewhere relaxing
Although our ‘actual’ honeymoon is our three month europe trip, our post-wedding celebration is not a mess of logistics, driving, metal festivals, cheap food, camping and museums. Although we LOVE those things, I’m glad our honeymoon was just three days of us chilling out and enjoying each other’s company.
Don’t Cook
One thing I remember about our wedding/honeymoon was that for about seven or eight days I didn’t have to cook a single meal. What a treat! Seriously, camping/self-catering units are cool and all, but on your honeymoon, you have better things to do!
